Install, reinstall, uninstall & your data
What happens to billing, campaigns, and your data when you install, uninstall, or reinstall the app — and what to do to come back.
When you install, uninstall, or reinstall Llama Upsell & Cross-Sell, a lot happens behind the scenes to your billing, your campaigns, and your data. This page is the billing-and-data companion to the install guide — that page is the click-by-click how-to, while this one explains what each action does to your subscription, your saved campaigns, and the records the app keeps. Read it before you uninstall so there are no surprises, and use the checklist at the end when you come back.
What happens when you install
Installing the app from the Shopify App Store kicks off a one-time setup that wires your store into the app. You don't have to do any of this yourself — it runs automatically during the install handshake.
| What's created or set up | What it does |
|---|---|
| Store record | The app creates a record for your store stamped with your install date and your store currency. This currency drives how prices and discounts are shown across your campaigns. |
| Installation record | A separate install-tracking record is created (and any previous "uninstalled" timestamp is cleared). This is what tells the app you're currently installed. |
| Webhooks | The app subscribes to the Shopify events it needs to stay in sync: orders created, orders edited, app uninstalled, subscription updated, and shop updated (currency changes). |
| Merchant & contact info | Your store name, contact details, plan, and region are recorded so support can help you and so install notifications fire internally. |
| 7-day free trial | Your 7-day free trial begins. You can build and test campaigns during the trial before any charges start. |
The 7-day free trial starts at install and is tied to your store. See Plans & billing for what each plan includes and how the trial leads into billing.
After install, finish setup by enabling the app embed and running each campaign's Setup Guide — the install guide covers those steps in detail.
What happens when you uninstall
When you remove the app from Shopify Admin → Apps, Shopify fires an app-uninstalled event and the app runs a best-effort cleanup. Here's the chain of events:
Shopify signals the uninstall
Shopify sends the app its app-uninstalled webhook, which kicks off the cleanup.
Billing stops
Your recurring Shopify subscription for the app ends, so Shopify stops billing you. Charges run through Shopify's billing system, so there's no separate payment to cancel.
Your installation record is timestamped
The app stamps your installation record with the date you uninstalled. This is kept for churn tracking — it's how the app knows you were here before, which matters when you reinstall.
Storefront campaigns stop serving
Because the app's storefront access is removed, your campaign widgets, Llama Cart, and discounts stop appearing on your store.
Uninstalling immediately stops every campaign from serving on your storefront. If you only want to pause offers, deactivate the campaigns instead of uninstalling — that keeps the app running, keeps billing on, and leaves everything ready to switch back on.
What happens to your data
This is the question most merchants care about, so it's worth being precise: uninstalling does not wipe your work. There's an important split between data that lives inside your Shopify store and data that lives in the app's own records.
| Where it lives | What happens on uninstall |
|---|---|
| Inside your Shopify store (storefront metafields, theme app blocks, app embed) | Removed with the app. Shopify takes away the app's access, so the values it wrote into your store — the metafields that drive your widgets and the theme blocks you placed — go away. |
| In the app's own records (campaigns, conditions, customizations, historical orders and metrics) | Kept. Your campaign documents, their conditions and customizations, and your historical order/analytics data persist after uninstall. Shopify removing the app's access doesn't erase the app's own database. |
Your subscription is preserved as a draft
Rather than discarding your billing context, the app converts your subscription into a draft subscription when you leave. This preserved record is what lets a reinstall restore your plan context instead of creating a duplicate subscription. You don't manage this yourself — it's automatic, and it's the reason coming back is smooth rather than a from-scratch setup.
Because campaigns, conditions, customizations, and your historical metrics all persist, reinstalling brings back your saved offers and your reporting history. What it does not bring back automatically is the storefront wiring — see the reinstall steps below.
What happens when you reinstall
Reinstalling reconnects your existing records to your store. Most of your setup is already there, but the storefront pieces that were removed on uninstall have to be put back.
| On reinstall | What happens |
|---|---|
| Installation record | The "uninstalled" timestamp is cleared, marking you as installed again. |
| Subscription | Your draft subscription is converted back into a real subscription, restoring your plan context. |
| Campaigns | Your previously created campaigns are still there — none were deleted on uninstall. |
| Storefront wiring | The storefront metafields and theme blocks were removed on uninstall, so you must re-enable the app embed and re-run each campaign's Setup Guide to put your offers back on the storefront. |
| Free trial | A new trial is generally not granted if you already used or expired one. Reinstalling is not a way to restart the 7-day trial. |
After reinstalling, your campaigns exist but won't show on your storefront until you re-enable the app embed and re-run the Setup Guide for each one. This is expected — the storefront blocks and metafields were removed when you uninstalled, and only those storefront pieces need rebuilding.
Currency and timezone re-sync
On reinstall, the app re-reads your store's currency and timezone from Shopify and syncs them again. If your store's currency changed while the app was gone, price-based campaign rules are re-evaluated against the current currency so your offers stay consistent. If anything looks off, see the troubleshooting note about manual sync below.
Edge cases to watch for
Checklist: coming back after uninstall
Use this list to get fully live again after a reinstall. The detailed steps for each item are in the install guide.
Reinstall the app
Install Llama Upsell & Cross-Sell again from the Shopify App Store. Your campaigns and subscription context are restored automatically.
Enable the app embed
In Online Store → Themes → Customize → App Embeds, toggle Llama Upsells on for your active theme and Save. Without this, no widgets render.
Toggle Llama Cart back on (if you used it)
If you ran the Llama Cart drawer before, re-enable it from the Customizer page. The toggle stays disabled until the app embed is active, so do this after the previous step.
Re-run the Setup Guide for each campaign
Open each campaign and click Setup Guide to re-place its widget on your storefront (Connect to Online Store or Connect to Llama Cart). The Setup Guide must be completed per campaign because the storefront blocks were removed on uninstall.
Reactivate campaigns within your plan limit
Switch your campaigns back to active. Remember that only active items count toward your plan limits — if you're over the limit, the extras stay saved but inactive until you make room or upgrade.
Re-add post-purchase and checkout extensions
If you ran Post-Purchase or Checkout Upsell campaigns, re-add the Llama Upsells extension in Settings → Checkout (post-purchase) and to your checkout template (Checkout Upsell, Shopify Plus). These store-side extensions were removed with the app.
Once the embed is on, each campaign's Setup Guide is complete, and your campaigns are active within your plan limit, your offers are serving again exactly as before — with your full reporting history intact.
Troubleshooting
My campaigns are back in the app but nothing shows on the storefront. This is the expected state right after a reinstall. Re-enable the app embed for your active theme, then re-run the Setup Guide for each campaign. Until both are done, the storefront has no widgets to render.
- A leftover widget or stale value remains after reinstall. Cleanup is best-effort, so a stray value can survive an uninstall. Run a manual sync from inside the app, or re-run the affected campaign's Setup Guide, to clear it.
- Prices or discounts look wrong after reinstall. Your store currency may have changed while the app was gone. The app re-syncs currency on reinstall and re-evaluates price-based rules; if anything still looks off, trigger a sync so the latest currency is applied.
- I expected a fresh 7-day trial and didn't get one. A new trial generally isn't granted once you've used or expired your original one. Reinstalling restores your existing plan context rather than starting a new trial.
